York is known as the “White Rose City” after the symbol of the Traditional English “house of York”.  The population of York City was almost 44,000 as of 2010.  In addition to being the 14th largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania York is the seat of government for York County, PA.

York City was founded around 1741 and originally known as Yorktown – it was truly the “wilds” on the other side of the Susquehanna River in that time.  In 1787 it formally became a city.  It’s a bone of contention among historians, but York lays claim to being the first capital of the new United States.
